The microtransactions is the least important reason to wait for a sale - they have no impact on the game what-so-ever, you should ignore them and that will actually only improve your experience.

You might try downgrading to TNM 1.0.4+ and see if that fixes the issue. If it doesn't, perhaps try uninstalling HDTP just to see if that does the trick. Other than that I'm not sure what would have changed, but if that savegame is really 5 years old, maybe it'd be best to just restart from the begi...
