Create NEW detailed texture with 3dsmax+mental ray+photoshop

Hi people, let me ask you a question.

I would create a new detailed texture to apply at a pistol model made with 3d studio max 2008. Is it possible create this texture directly in 3dsmax, maybe using mental ray (already installed) and bump/other options???

I've found a low texture for the pistol, but I don't like.
What do create your texture for New Vision? Can u explain me?

Not really, you can't do anything but make 'materials' with 3d Studio Max alone (where you can alter how shiny it is, that kind of thing). You need to Unwrap it and texture it - look for tutorials on UV Mapping and Photoshop.

We create most of them from photo's, changing colours and making them tile seamlessly. For creating a gun though, you usually start from scratch with a base metal-like texture and paint on scratches and stuff.

But, teorically is possible to get a texture made by flatten (!) rendered surface?

Yes, but it'd be difficult to make it look good.
