Post White & Black Intro?
Just got back to playing Deus Ex for the first time in well over six years and almost forgot about The Nameless Mod. I downloaded it ASAP and was really excited to play. I open up the shortcut on the desktop and get pretty much nothing. A black background with random white boxes.

I've seen that others have had this problem but there hasn't been any sure way to fix it according the my research. Trying to play on Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit. Deus Ex runs perfectly on both my laptop and desktop which both run the same version I just mentioned. Both systems have the white box error.

The only way to do anything with the application is close it from the task manager, no other buttons seem to have an effect. Anybody have any solutions? Please do not give me the whole "try Windows XP compatibility mode" because we all know that it's a bunch of crap.

I'm sure someone here can help. I can't. All I can suggest is reinstalling Deus Ex cleanly, run it, then install TNM with the latest patch.

I'd like to say though that the Compatibility Modes in windows are useful. Occasionally they'll trick a program into running, or force it into using old libraries that don't have the problem. Win32 is a hilarious heap of compatibility hacks.

Sounds like a renderer issue to me. If you have Direct Draw as the default renderer try OpenGL or vice versa.

Already tried switching renderer's but it doesn't seem to have any effect for TNM. Also tried reinstalling Deus Ex and TNM multiple times, no dice.

How did you go about changing the renderer?

You have to use the method described in the Troubleshooting section of the PDF manual, you can't use Deus Ex's renderer selection menu :)

I do not see how the render can be changed in the .INI. Tried changing multiple settings, no effect.

What do you mean you don't see how it can be changed in the .ini? Did you read the Troubleshooting section in the manual?

Fuck it I'll just copy/paste it in here:

I wrote:
Problem: I’m experiencing visual glitches and other graphics problems.
Solution: Try changing your renderer. Which renderer you ought to use depends on your video card and drivers. Open TNM\System\ TNM.ini and find the line that starts with GameRenderDevice. If it says “D3DDrv.D3DrenderDevice” (without the quotation marks) after the equation mark, try changing it to “OpenGLDrv. OpenGLRenderDevice” (again, no quotes) or vice versa. If this doesn’t solve the problem, try visiting our forums and maybe we can help you out.

Thanks for posting that, though the error is still happening. Black background, random white boxes, nothing else.

Okay, trying to think outside of the box (not my strong suit). Can you go to the ini and change the resolution to your monitor's native resolution?

The TMN ini

WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=640
WindowedViewportY=480
WindowedColorBits=32
FullscreenViewportX=1920
FullscreenViewportY=1080

My native resolution is 1920X1080...yours may be different.

It's already set to my maximum resolution. 1280 x 800.

Gah, well the only other thing I can think of, is if you tried OpenGL and D3D, than maybe try 3dfx Glide for Windows. Sorry for not being much help.

No no, your trying. I appreciate it.

Also, maybe it's worth mentioning that when I close it from task manager I get a general protection fault error followed by multiple urender::drawframe messages. Maybe this sheds some light on the problem?

You're gonna hate me. Have you uninstalled Deus Ex and completely removed all of it. I suggest right clicking on it, the Deus Ex folder, in the program files and deleting it there. After that restart your computer install Deus Ex again and start the process over. This thread might be a clue, although there's no guarantee it's the same issue as yours.

The game wouldn't start up because for some strange reason some of my Deus Ex files were corrupted so I had to delete and reinstall because reinstalling it without deleting it wouldn't work for some stupid reason, and then I just changed the renderer the way you guys told me and it started right up.

Yeah, reinstalling cleanly really is the best first step. If it fails (or already failed, if it was a clean reinstall), then its a problem with the OS or hardware. Vista and Windows2008 were disasters for me, so I'm willing to believe Windows7Ultimate64bitXtreme has issues I just can't help with. Others have it working. I can only come back and help if it's a hardware issue.
