Graphics corruption, repeated. (not alt-tab vertex issue)

Post by admiraljustin »

Well, Jonas, and the rest, of course, I did mention I try to identify problems before I report. This is a fairly serious one that has occured 4 times now, however.

Corruption occurs in-game, but remains even after the game is closed (and unloaded from memory).

While I have yet to track down the cause (no single action in-game seems to cause it at this point) I do have pictures, and the ability to upload a short video if needed.

I don't know if this is related to:

1. Graphics card itself (but I'm using the most recent Nvidia WHQL drivers).
2. Some nasty SLI bug (but, turning off SLI hasn't stopped it).
3. The third-party OpenGL renderer used by TNM (need to try dx9, but I didn't get an answer if there were any other negative effects as to using it, compared to the OpenGL renderer)
4. Other.

So, all I have is evidence.

I will upload the video somewhere if needed.

System specs (Yes, I have done beta testing before, so I know you'll probably want this)

Code: Select all

Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz
2GB DDR 2 RAM
2x Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT 1GB (SLI)
Windows Visa SP1 (32-bit)
Drivers are about as updated as they can be.

Deus Ex disk used to install is the original release version. Game version is 1112fm.

TNM version is ISO Torrent.

Alright this is pretty thorugh, but before we try anything else, give the DX9 renderer a shot. You can get it here:

Thanks :)

Have you checked if you get this in vanilla Deus Ex?

Has yet to appear in vanilla DX. No freezes every 2-3 minutes either.

My guess, atm, is that maybe the multicore code is not liking the graphics driver.

Well you could try backing up your TNM.exe and then copying your DeusEx.exe and renaming it to TNM.exe. That will make TNM use the original Deus Ex launcher, perhaps that'll help? Keep us updated :)

Have you tryed disabling cores?

>> Corruption occurs in-game, but remains even after the game is closed (and unloaded from memory).

That indicates that the hardware was affected. In addition to temporarily disabling your extra CPU cores as stucuk suggested, you could try different versions of video driver, although that's a pain.

But based on the description of the problem, it is more likely that one or both of the cards is overheating. You could try reducing the load on the system, by lowering the texture quality or resolution that the game uses, or underclocking your GPUs as a test.

Also check the video cards for dust bunnies and air flow. Improving the cooling can solve some problems, especially when SLI is involved.

As a final test, you could fall back to just one video card. Note that I said "as a test"...

That would be very odd, as my case has very good cooling, internal temps never go over 55C, and I most recently undusted the internals about 2 days ago.

Edit: and a playthrough of dx for 10m didn't even show a 2C temp raise :X

It would be odd that I can play GTA IV, which is far more intense on the graphics cards, for longer and with more stability than deus ex. I can play UT3 forever.
