Critical Errors and win98se and GOTY version of Deus-EX

Post by zoya4eva »

Hi Everyone and all you buggers who are playing The Nameless Mod without any problems !
Its always a delight to attempt and then get a Mod going that seems to HATE you !
I remember a couple of examples - Half Life -Paranoia, System Shock 2 with the Rebirth and SHTUP packs......
They did not defeat me :twisted: !!. (For a girl thems pretty big words ).

Anyway, I should get to the point...

I have installed TNM a couple of times now and get this:
CRITICAL ERROR: Can't find file for package TNM.
I know some other people have had this problem and have found adding those extra files to the INI folder worked.
Those files were missing from mine too but when I added them it didn't fix it. (also same with someone else).
I did try putting the TNM folder in the DEUS EX folder and after that I only got one CRITICAL ERROR :Cant find ini: Engine.Game Engine in configuration file.
So I thought I was getting somewhere.... yeah right.
My download of the game is okay and when I click on the shortcut to go to TNM it plays the Splash screen and just goes to vanilla DEUS EX.

I am thinking this is a small problem either with win98 handling of the shortcut or some other stupid thing.
So, if anyone would like to solve this most important problem, cause its bigger than swine flu !, I would be very thankful.

Damn, you know I really hate to say this, but I don't think TNM is compatible with Windows 98. It may be different with the SE version, but people have reported that the C++ runtimes we used don't support Win 98. We didn't know that when we made the game.

Though I don't remember it giving this precise error, so this could very well be due to something else.

Where did you install TNM to, and where is your TNM shortcut pointing? Check that TNM is installed to your Deus Ex directory.

Then report back :)

Thanks for the input.
The shortcut target points to
"C:\Program Files\DeusEx\System\TNM.exe" -hax0r INI="C:\Program Files\DeusEx\TNM\System\TNM.ini" USERINI="C:\Program Files\DeusEx\TNM\System\TNMUser.ini" log=TNM.log
and it starts in
"C:\Program Files\DeusEx\System"

----------------------------------------------

By the way,(this may sound dumb) when the TNM installation asks that you run Deus EX once before installing TNM, do they mean to have at least one save or to play the game to the end?

Thanks

I wonder if there is a conflict somewhere because of the two TNM.ini files. Maybe the DOS command is not right for win98?
All that runtime stuff went in okay...

You ran DX once (just have to start it up, no need to actually play it or anything) before installing TNM, right? Could you attach your TNM.ini to a post?

I've been having another look at my TNM.ini folder and comparing it with the answer for the Post "Cant find file for Package TNM " SOLUTION !
I seem to be missing alot more files than were listed in the solution list. I have been making a list of the missing files and will post that soon.

Hmm, it looks like the installer copied over your DeusEx.ini but failed to make any of the TNM specific changes, for some reason. You'll need to add the TNM stuff to the Paths section and the Editpackages section. I'm not at home right now or I'd paste in the relevant stuff, but you can also check out the thread you mentioned and grab it from there, if not, I'll get it for you tomorrow :)

Hi Trestkon and anyone else who's interested....

The missing files are numerous and I'll start with the ones(their absence)which I think may be the cause of this diabolical dilemma .
In my TNM.ini there is no .... (from comparison with Morpheus's TNM.ini)

Edit packages= UBrowser
'' '' UMenu
'' '' TNM
'' '' TNMNative
'' '' TNMItems
'' '' TNMDeco
'' '' TNMCharacters
'' '' TNMText
'' '' TNMTNMConvos1
'' '' TNMTNMConvos2
'' '' TNMDataVault
'' '' TNMGUI
'' '' CaroneElevatorSet
'' '' Precipitation
'' '' DxOgg
'' '' CaroneelevatorSet
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Also...
Save Path=..TNM\Save
Paths= ..TNM\Maps\*.dx
Paths= ..TNM\Textures\*.utx
Paths=..TNM\Sounds\*.uax
Ogg Path= ..TNM\Music\Ogg

Note that while there is no TNM\Save there is
...\Save so should that be replaced with the TNM\Save ??

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Query?? in:
[DeusEx.DeusExGameEngine]

My CacheSizeMegs is 4 where its 64 in Morpheus's TNM.ini
Query?? in :
[Editor.EditorEngine]
My CacheSizeMegs is 4 where his is 64.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also missing...(although I am not sure if this is because of my particular system specs.Knowing me, this is really important!)

GameRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
AudioDevice=Class'Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem'
Console=TNMGUI.tnmConsole
NetworkDevice=Class'IpDrv.TcpNetDriver'
------------------------------------------------------

There are other lines but these are the main ones so I'll go with these first.

Thanks.

Hello,

I have the exact same kind of error messages (except I have Win ME) and have been following the advice on this page and in the other sticky with regards to adding missing stuff into the INI file.

However it has not fixed the problem for me. The critical error message is getting shorter, but it still 'cannot find package for engine' (?)

Original Error message (before adding stuff to the INI)

Current error message (after adding selective INI info)

It's a pity I can't play because it looks like you guys have created a real piece of art !

I thought i'd go for broke and just copy the entire INI file (except the Graphics card bits), and got no TNM errors, but got a standard Windows crash box saying 'TNM caused an error in DX0GG.DLL'
which had to be clicked 3 times to clear it.

Bugger ! :)

Hi fellow tnm deprived travellers !,
I now have the same problem as veruccio, but we seem to be getting closer.
Like veruccio I only copied the edit packages files, core system .
So I'm wondering about the dx.ogg file path or its version. or a number of things.
I was going to ask you veruccio if you could check your TNM.ini file in the system of TNM and check the CacheSize Megs= and tell me what yours is. I think its mentioned twice.
Thanks.
PS. I've installed both patches and no fix I'm afraid.

I'm starting to think this mod is NOT compatible with win98se.
That would be sad because DX was really a win98 game :cry:

It should be set to 64.

It really seems like the installer didn't edit any of the values, can one of you attach your DeusEx.ini for me?
