DX GOTY problem... feel like a noob

Post by InGroove2 »

DX GOTY Pauses, sounds loop, resumes with garbled sound and funky textures

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey... i'm not a noob, and have played this on this system before with no problem... but i just can't seem to best this problem...

i run XP, fully updated and an older nVidia FX5 card... which i've used to run GOTY before a few times with no problem. my sound system is varied, since i used this computer primarily for recording music, i have an ECHO MIA 2in 2 out card, a sound blaster card (used for it's firewire interface into which i have a DIGI002 rack/ProTools system hooked up).

the game runs great for while... a few minutes, then it'll just lock up, the sound will loop for a bit, then change to a different sound and loop a bit, some sounds will only happen once, then after a bit the game will resume... and it seems random, sometimes it only happens every 5 minutes, sometimes it happens like every 10 seconds. i've tinkered with the settings, used both the MIA dn the sound blaster.... hmmm i haven't tried the onboard sound. I've used various renderers and resolutions and quality settings... i can't find a solution.

anybody? thanks!

Sometimes that weird shit happens when the game runs too fast. I had to install dual core optimizer (more for TNM). If you only have one processor though I don't know what would cause that as you have mentioned changing renderers. Someone else might have a better clue.

Welcome to the forums! Yeah it sure sounds like it could be a dual-core problem, try setting the process affinity to one. I won't explain how cus you're not a noob :)

You can use cpukiller to slow down your PC, if you are really sure that the CPU is the one at fault.
I had to use it to play Anachronox properly

I have run into issues like this on my studio computer.

Strangely enough the problems went away on their own.

I have played that since upgrading my rig. The dual core optimizer does work with that as well.

Ok so it looks like this is a known issue:
http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk ... hp?t=40614
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/for ... 6003489731

so to summ it up you can try:
"Go to your Deusex.ini file and set the game speed to about .3 or lower. It shouldn't actually slow the game down any slower than intended, but it does have the effect of compensating for really fast computers."
"Try turning off/on sound acceleration as well."
"You also could try setting the CPU affinity. Dual-CPU's may cause issues with older games."

Weird. I have had that problem in old games too (eg. Boiling Point), but not DX yet. The Deus Ex game speed setting is a new one to me.

deusex.exe is getting old. Maybe it'll be compatible with DosBox soon. That's a joke, but it might not be long before we need to distribute VirtualBox DeusEx drive images.

Oh, I've noticed that. Not on Normal Deus Ex, just when I play Revision.

Everything speeds up.

my game does NOT run fast.

i actually believe it has something to do with a bug in the video card...

a notoriously elusive nv4 bug... still researching it. someone on a board somehwere (an anonymous crypto board maybe?) described exactly my prblem... which i realize i didn't include here that after the stalling period, when it resumed many textures are screwed up and the sound is garbled.

Try onboard sound, i had sound stuttering bugs in DX a while back.
I have a Delta 1010lt and an old Audigy 2 -- I had a problem like this this.. but i didn't do anything to fix it. it went away on its own.

When we are forced to go with Windows seven are there going to be any games not compatible with it? It's not the most important question of the day ....... oh, wait.
