Whats wrong with filters? I use them all the time when im working...
It strikes me there's some elitist attitude where neglecting to use a simpler route in favor of obsessively altering your image pixel by pixel to achieve the same end is being construed as preferable?
Here's one : For 50 bonus photoshop style points try to execute an image without once using the right mouse button. WOW!
Do what works. If that means filters. usem' You'll probably end up using mostly brushwork anyway, but filters are often very handy.
Indeed, most actual good work is done by hand. A good artist can produce good work using Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro, or even MS Paint. But then you have the filter-monkeys who just load up an image in Photoshop and try to use all the filters and effects and plugins as a substitute for talent. Hellllo, lens flare and page curl! So when someone asks me if an extraordinarily trivial effect* was achieved with a filter, I'm going to assume that it's one of those I'm-clueless-without-my-filters people.
Yes, I'm cranky today. I have a toothache.
* which was in this case: scale down, crop, load Gameboy palette with dithering enabled

You'd be surprised on how much of my stuff uses filters lol. They are very handy tools IF you know how to use them properly. I've seen some really crap filters, but most of the time I see some nice ones. Theres a way of hiding the fact that you've used a filter, but I guess you guys already know that.
