Gunther Hermann.

Post by Phasmatis »

Although Gunther is finished, Metche and I thought it would be best to post the finished images here as the Gunther opinions thread became very messy.

I also did some promotional shots of him, I doubt I will do this for all the characters but I wanted to have a little fun before I went to work on someone else.

The screenshots are 1024x768 so I will post links to them instead of posting them as images.

Screenshots ingame:
Gunther ingame side.
Gunther ingame talking.
Gunther ingame talking.

Promotional Renders:
Gunther promo full.
Gunther promo face close up.

You are more than welcome to comment but please remember this is the finished version of Gunther and he is currently being animated so there can be no changes.

That went kinda quickly... Mixed feelings about the finished model and textures, but overall the result is good! The only strange thing about the finished product is the tubes in Gunther's arm -- they seem a bit weird as 2D textures. Glad to see some of the oddities in the original Gunther were fixed -- he looks a hell of a lot scarier now! It will be interesting how he moves in a fight, and how he speaks... Good work, improvement is always welcome! :D

I'm pretty sure the teeth is just one surface with a really nice texture. At least I think it would be sort of a waste of polygons to model teeth individually, lol. But you're right, they look very nice.

Looks very very awesome, pity there's no bump mapping in Deus Ex.

Another random thought... You're gonna have to redo the little character portraits that come up whenever you recieve an in-game message from an NPC... 'Cause look at Gunther now, and compare him with the old portrait -- big difference! Still, I can't wait to see the animated Gunther talking, walking and fighting in-game -- it'd be really cool of footage of him actually implemented into the game, and not just a generated map as in the promo videos... Like what was done with the photos!

True, it would look pretty odd. I don't think terribly many characters used the infolink; Alex (J.), Gunther, Jaime, Paul, Tong, Helios/Daedalus/Icarus, Page, Jock (Helicopter), Simons, and Everett. I seem to remember a few of those being stylized a bit, looking a bit better than the models did (the AIs having no models).

We have the in-game shots as well as the generated-map-videos, I'm happy with that much. Better to spend the time on Anna and Vending_Machine (, the pot on the counter, ATM, and the news terminal) for that ingame video :)

Because I can, a list of all infolink portraits in Deus Ex:

Alex Jacobson
Anna Navarre
Bob Page
Bob Page Augmented
Daedalus
Gary Savage
Gunther Hermann
Helios
Icarus
Jaime Reyes
Jock
Morgan Everett
Paul Denton Caucasian
Paul Denton Black
Paul Denton Hispanic
Paul Denton Redhead
Paul Denton Albino
Sam Carter
Stanton Dowd
Tracer Tong
Walton Simons

Of course the three AI's won't need new portraits, so that's just 18 new portraits to make, that shouldn't take so long. All they'll need is a slightly desaturated close-up of the character's face on some swirly grey background (except, strangely, Alex and Jock, who have pure black backgrounds...)

I already spoke to metche about this, she said "not till later"
so don't get your hopes up on that enhancement yet.

once each model is finnished we make the infolink portrait... that'd be the best way to handle it I suppose.
