Thanks EER, but I just tried that with no luck, same message. Also I found that it works in safe mode, with ALL the "safe mode tick-boxes" turned off, so i could use it like that, only it resets all of my settings every time, mainly the resolution which i need at 1900 x 1200 really... weird

Is there anything in the log? Probably deusex.log in the System directory.

Oh man, I thought I did a write-up about how to get HDTP to work within Steam.

Well, the long and short of it is, you need a copy of DeusEx.exe from a non-Steam copy of the game. Then, replace the Steam DeusEx.exe with the retail DeusEx.exe and it should work.

And since you're trying to use HDTP through Steam, you'll need to replace the current HDTP.exe with a retail DeusEx.exe renamed to HDTP.exe. The reason for this is that the HDTP installer (if I remember correctly) makes a copy of DeusEx.exe that's found in the ./System/ folder; since the DeusEx.exe in the Steam folder is broken to only work through Steam, HDTP.exe is also broken.

Does that make sense? Let me know if you have any questions :)

NINJA EDIT: Oh yeah, I also found out that the Steam DeusEx.exe doesn't like OpenGL mode at all, even with the new renderer in place; it's like Eidos enforced D3D functionality when they released it on Steam. If I remember correctly, following the above steps also gets OpenGL working properly.

I used the OpenGL update on the steam version and I played through the whole game without a single problem in OpenGL mode in 1280x1024 resolution. Maybe you changed something else without realizing it. If it helps I am running a GeForce 7900 GS.

Instead of buying a retail copy of Deus Ex couldn't you just download the latest patch and use 7-zip to extract the DeusEx.exe from it and use that?

Is there anything that prevents this from working?

The DeusEx.exe from the patch files and the one in currently in my game are the same size so theoretically it should work right?

Yep. That has been brought up, actually, though I don't know if it was in another thread.

I brought it up in another thread before.

However, the fact that it isn't mentioned very often even though it seems more convenient tells me that there might be a problem with this solution that you guys know about and I'm not aware of. :?

Not that I know. One person reported it did not work, but others have reported that it does.

Well if it doesn't work then you could also download the custom launcher from here and use that executable:
http://coding.hanfling.de/launch/

Actually that might be better than getting the one from the patch because this one is supposedly modified so it doesn't have speed problems with dual cores and speedstepper.
